The focus is on reinforcing desired behaviors. The trap of punishing the unwanted behaviors is broken and a new better relationship is developed. It is lovely to watch this scenario unfold time after time. That is why I am a dog trainer. At Look What I Can Do!, there are no BAD dogs, just dogs that don`t understand WHAT to do. Everyone likes to get paid for what they are doing! For dogs, food is the most universal motivator. Once behaviors are fluent in a wide variety of settings, the food treats can then become random, to keep the dog guessing when it might next get “paid.” Ongoing education in the form of reading, attending seminars and conferences and networking with other trainers is of the utmost importance to me. No one can ever know all there is to know about dogs. It is a fascinating field with opportunity to learn every day from every client and their dog. It can also be quite humbling as well at times!
